Hey guys, Daniel Richardson back here for day two of the Wellington sevens at Westpac Stadium. Very sparse turnout at the Cake Tin but that can be expected given hangovers, a bit of overnight rain and the fact New Zealand don't play their quarter-final until 2.55pm. Wales and Tonga are starting us off for the day in their bowl QF.
I think NZ should breeze through their QF against Canada, will be tougher from there. Any of the teams in the quarter-finals could be a threat. Should be a decent day of sevens. Once a few more punters start filing in I will update about the crowd
Scotland and Spain in action in their bowl QF now and Scotland are up 19-0 in the first half. Spain have been woeful here this weekend
Right, these games matter little for the first part of the day and it's reflected in the turnout of humans here. Town was busy last night,
I can reliably report. I stuck to lemonades though
Sorry for the hiatus, team. Having gone for a decent walk and acquired my first of what will be many cups of coffee for the day I can confirm it's pretty damn cold here at Westpac. If you're going to turn up in a revealing outfit today, either hope to find someone to keep you warm or find a secluded spot in the Cake Tin
Laura, if you're reading, girl, yoga pants for you today and not the mini skirt. If you don't get this reference, you should have been following along yesterday! Also, if you are reading, watching or whatever, feel free to post a comment and we can have a bit of banter. Please keep the comments educated, worldly and humorous if possible though. Similar to the general chilled-out, entertaining style of this blog
NZ are out here warming up now too for their QF v Canada in about half an hour
England and Samoa out here now for our first QF, or, basically, our first game of any importance today
Topsy-turvy game, Sevens. England beat South Africa yesterday, who hadn't lost in three tournaments, while Samoa blew a sure thing against Australia. Samoa now lead England 5-0 in the first half
Basically, any team in the Cup QFs can make a claim to being a finalist these days. The game has certainly expanded. Let's also remember, Kenya, last year's beaten finalists in Wellington, flamed out in pool play this weekend
Samoa up 5-0 at the half here v England...
Hold the phone, England score early in the 2nd spell.... This one is close
NZ are the game up next BTW and will, of course, play Canada ehhhhh
England make the kick so they're up 7-5.... England always turn it on in Wellington
England are in again. The winner of this game will meet NZ - providing NZ beat Canada - in the semis...
England knock over Samoa 21-5 and they roll on. Big threat here today. NZ up next and the rain is really coming in...
NZ come out to "Back in Black"
Home side starting well here... earn a scrum on attck
NZ give away the penalty. These conditions will be a massive difference maker
Kaka is in for NZ and the Kiwis will play from in front...
Misses the conversion by plenty and it's 5-0 to NZ
Now Scott Curry crosses for a 5-pointer. NZ dominant here
Kaka converts, 12-0 to NZ
Closing in on halftime and this rain is sweeping in...
Halftime. 12-0 NZ. Conditions are tough. The long sprigs are in play
If NZ don't concede any points it will be their third straight game with a clean slate
Bryce Heem has been impressive today. Big lad and he gets round the track nicely.
NZ on top. Would like another try to ice it here though...
Scott Curry answers the call. He is in. Shut the gate. This one is done
17-0. Kaka ain't kicking well but it's tough conditions to drop kick in
George Tilsley has been sent to the bin. NZ a man down now
Canada knock it on with open real estate in front.... NZ will wind the clock down here...
Knock ons galore out here. These conditions are terrible. NZ will rumble on though and England await at about 6.35pm
Tilsley scores. 24-0. Kick to come...
Cama kicks it. Sorry 24-0 final
South Africa and Aus are up now in their QF...
Still no score here between Aus and SA in their QF....
It's half time BTW. Has there ever been a 7s world series game that has been 0-0? Granted, maybe I should know this, but I don't
South Africa score first here. Up 5-0....
10-0 to South Africa, which gives them this game with only a few seconds to play
They will roll on to the semis and will meet the winner of Fiji v Argentina which is up next
After the Fiji game we have a 9-minute interval and then a vast collection of games that have very little significance as the shield, bowl and plate finals roll on. Basically it's for those teams in search of hardware that isn't as good as the cup
