Hello and welcome to tonight's live blog of the Warriors 2014 season opener against the Parramatta Eels at Pirtek Stadium.
I'm Steven Holloway and I will be joined tonight by experienced rugby league writer Michael Brown as we endeavour to bring you all the action from Parramatta.
So, will the Warriors win tonight? Well, not if they start like normal. They’ve lost their last four matches in the opening round of the season. But, their last success was against the Eels in 2009, a side they also beat first up in 2007, the only first-round wins in the last 11 years
The Warriors have enjoyed a mixed pre-season with trials against the Titans at North Harbour Stadium (a 36-18 loss), against the Broncos in Dunedin (a 48-4 win) and against the visiting Wigan Warriors side in Hamilton (a 46-22 loss).
The Eels have managed to recruit some talented pieces this season in the form of Corey Norman, Nathan Peats, Justin Hunt and Lee Mossop, all of whom fill in some gaping holes on their roster.
Sam Tomkins, Glen Fisiiahi, Dane Nielsen, Carlos Tuimavave, Manu Vatuvei, Chad Townsend, Shaun Johnson, Sam Rapira, Nathan Friend, Ben Matulino, Jayson Bukuya, Simon Mannering, John Palavi. Interchange: Jacob Lillyman, Suaia Matagi, Sione Lousi, Feleti Mateo, Jerome Ropati
Jarryd Hayne, Semi Radradra, William Hopoate, Willie Tonga, Vai Toutai, Corey Norman, Luke Kelly, Tim Mannah, Nathan Peats, Fuifui Moimoi, Ben Smith, Manu Ma'u, Ken Edwards. Interchange: Joseph Paulo, Peni Terepo, Darcy Lussick, Kelepi Tanginoa, David Gower, Mitch Allgood.
It was a tough start for Stacey Jones as the new under-20s coach, with his Junior Warriors side going down to the Junior Eels 50-24 in the curtainraiser
The majority of the Warriors' off-season hype has surrounded the signing of Wigan superstar Sam Tomkins who will make his debut tonight. Check out Michael's recent interview with him here.
We are about five minutes away from kick off now and the crowd is filling up nicely. Who is excited? Join the chat tonight by clicking 'comment' and sharing your thoughts. You can start by telling me who you think will win, or where you're tuning in from..
The players are completing their final preparations in the changing room and we are nearly ready to go.
Here they come, the Warriors are first out and recieve a muted welcome from the Parramatta faithful.
Sam Tomkins going with the bright orange boots today. The man has quite a collection
Now the Eels come bursting out of the sheds and the crowd erupt. It's a good crowd in tonight and the scene is set for a beauty.
Warriors have the kick off and Shaun Johnson sends a long one down to Tim Mannah.
The big man is straight in for a concussion test after a heavy hit from Sam Rapira. What a start. A dreadful one for Parramatta.
Mannah waddles off the field and the Eels have been awarded a penalty for some reason.
Eels kick for touch and now set up an attack on halfway.
Eels fail to complete their set and then the Warriors quickly pick up a penalty. Eels pinged for jumping the gun in the first tackle, up inside the ten.
Quick hands from Tomkins as he sends a pass toward big Manu. But the ball is wayward and the ball dribbles out into touch.
Semi Radradra has blitzed down the Warriors left hand side to score.
We are just going upstairs to check the grounding now.
It's all good. The try stands. Great start for the Eels.
That was really weak by the Warriors. Glen Fisiiahi came in on his man and Radradra skipped down the flank before the flying winger then stepped Tomkins. Not the sort of defence the Warriors have been hoping for this season
Corey Norman knocks over the extra two and the Eels have an early six point lead.
5 MINS - WARRIORS 0 EELS 6
Another quick break from the Eels takes them down to 10m out. Warriors hanging on.
The Warriors' right edge was a massive concern last season and they haven't started well in this one with another simple break down that side of the field by the Eels. Not great signs
On their last tackle they throw a forward pass. Warriors survive but their right hand side of defence has been breached twice already. That is troubling.
Johnson kicks for touch on the Warriors last tackle and motions for everyone to calm down and catch their breath. Eels looking good early.
Norman completes the Eels' set with a high kick down to Manu, who catches under no pressure.
Warriors earn a penalty now and Johnson fires one into touch. Warriors will start from halfway.
Bukuya looks like he lost the ball in the tackle but the ref rules it was stripped. Warriors 5m out now.
Eels defence holds strong but now they have given another penalty. Eels hanging on now.
Matulino held up in goal now. Tackle three will start from in front of the posts 5m out.
