Hello, welcome in to the live blog for tonight's Netball World Cup round qualification match between the Silver Ferns and the Malawi Queens
We're just waiting for the teams to be called into the arena
The two captains have just done the toss, and Casey Kopua blows it again. Malawi with the first centre pass
Coach Wai Taumaunu spoke yesterday about trying to give some players a bit of a rest after being battered over the last few days....Maria Tutaia was certainly one of those yesterday, so Brown gets the start.
Rasmussen is the only specialist WA in the squad so is getting a bit of a breather too. It's a big opportunity to Francois, although it's not her favoured position.
A few facts about Malawi:
- 2015 is their fifth World Cup appearance
- Their previous best World Cup finish was 5th in Auckland in 2007 and they are on track to match that again this year
- Malawi shooter Mwai Kumwenda is the first Malawi national team member to play in the ANZ Championship. She plays for the Tactix.
Malawi are also one of the shortest teams competing in Sydney, with an average height of 170.3cm - they still tower over Rikki though.
Only when I'm wearing flats.
Aside from Kumwenda, Malawi's defenders Vinkumbo and Mtkule, and the GA Sindi "the sniper" Simtowe are key players.
That's just one example of the outfits the kiwi fans are wearing, There is a rather vast array!
Macklemore is on the PA now....that's the cue for players to be called on to court.
And for me to start dancing in my chair again.
ANd play my imaginary trumpet.
She's outta control...seriously
Kumwenda the first player called on court. Both goal shoots are from the Tactix.
Lwazi the C for Malawi is so tiny, she's swimming in her playing dress.
Umpires are Jackie Mizon (SA) and Sharon Kelly (AUS)
Kelly was the umpire who pinged Bailey Mes a lot offensively last night, so it will be interesting to see whether the Ferns got the clarification they wanted and whether Mes can adjust.
Turnovers so far for Malawi and it's already NZ 4-0 MAL
Electric play from the Ferns on attack. Malawi's heads are spinning and they've called time out already.
Good to see them make a good show of putting ice on the knee
Good response since the time out from Malawi to score three quick goals, but Brown nets another for NZ.
@B: You shoule be able to see it at the top of the updates.
Malawi going backwards due to strong NZ defence and eventually fire it out the back.
@B: That's strange, it should have been there for the whole time. Let us know if it disappears or anything and I'll get my technical support on to it. (PS I am my techincal support!)
Malawi have fought back well to be back after going 6-nil down in the space of just a few minutes.
Brown got a ball in the mouth and checking it. Hope all her teeth are where they should be!
Ugly passages from NZ, with two wasted passes on attack giving MAL back possession and the chance to close to within two.
Malawian players bellowing at each other to the amusement of the crowd. they've got themselves back into it but the whistle goes for quarter-time
No changes for Ferns at quarter time, MAL with first possession.
Francois pinches it back for NZ. She's been very quiet in this match so far playing at WA.
Shows how vital Rasmussen has become to the Ferns.
NZ converts from an outstanding Cullen intercept.
Mes has learned from yesterday - standing absolutely upright and keeping her hands where the umpire can see them in all that pushing around in the circle.
woooahh that's a pass into row A from Mes. Sloppy from NZ
Gap closing again. and a held ball against Francois. I sense a rocket coming at half time.
Lwazi the C has gone down, there's a bit of confusion what's happened, but she's being treated on court.
