That wasn't the perfect race by Team NZ. Oracle were stronger in that final downwind leg by hugging the boundary near Alcatraz, cutting Team NZ's lead by 200m.
Team NZ then had a poor gybe which cut the lead further but the great work by Team NZ upwind set up the wind. Forcing Oracle to do the extra tack near the end of the upwind leg gave Team NZ the edge at the start of the next leg.
Dean Barker: "Very happy to sneak away with another win"
Barker on trying to get a better start over the team with port entry: "It's not easy"
Barker on whether the second race will start: "We would love to get another race away but we will wait and see"
Barker on the prospect of winning the America's Cup: "We are not thinking about that at all. We are staying in the here and now."
Some bad news though after a great start to the day, race 12 is in doubt.
Grant Dalton will sit out race 12.
Hi Monaco. Team NZ won the first race of the day and the next race is supposed to start in 20 minutes but the current could push conditions over the limit
Hi Just one more race. Team NZ generally win when Grant Dalton is on the boat. They have lost one without Dalton but only one
Winston Macfarlane will replace Dalton in race 12. Remember Oracle have port advantage in race 12. What will Team NZ do at the start? Worth being aggressive with an 8-1 lead?
Spithill: "Obviously we messed up the time on distance at the start but the boys put in a great effort and it was all on right to the finish."
Spithill on conditions for the second race: "I think we favour more wind. I don't think chop comes into it."
Spithill on their chances of retaining the Cup: "It's not over. It's a long way from over."
Happy to help, Monaco. Stay tuned for the next race
Let's just hope race 12 isn't postponed while Team NZ is in the lead.
